  • What makes me happy in Italy?

    October 1, 2017

So many things that I can’t mention them all.  In the 23 years I’ve been traveling to the countryside in Italy each trip is unique.  There is always more to discover and though I make the trip twice annually the excitement of arriving is always new.

Of course the heart of any country is its people who have created the culture.  And that culture, which is so diverse in Italy, creates its past.  I never tire of hearing stories, new and old, of the creation of that past.  Knowing that mythology can be based in fact I am always prompted to explore the myths that are offered by the residents of small villages.  On our last trip in May we visited a restored castle which had a fascinating history.  Part of the story, as in all stories of castles, tell of a visit by some famous artist or notable historical character.  Sometimes it’s Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci; sometimes one of the noble Medici.  But no story is complete without a famous visitor!

In about two weeks I will travel back to my second home country.  People always ask if I have some tie to Italy like family or heritage but no, it is a connection of heart, nothing more.  What makes me happy to be there is the pace of life, the appreciation of small things like a garden or greeting from a neighbor.  A walk among Etruscan or Roman ruins, paintings by the Masters, an orchard of olive trees or a vineyard.

  • What happens in October & November?

    October 14, 2014

October and November are wonderful months to visit Italy.  #smallgrouptoursitaly. True, the grape harvest is past but there may still be some truffles to snuffle out and the olives are ready to pick.  Olives need to be picked in one day, like the grapes and rushed off to the olive press immediately.  Some folks like ... With so much focus now on environmental impact it’s difficult to ignore the subject of traveling ecologically. It bothers me to think that I ... Read more
