A Taste of Venice - Daily Itinerary
This is what you can expect on our tour of Venice. The
listed order may not be the exact order, as we may change plans around in case
of rain or other issues.
Day one: You will be met at
the train station or the vaporetto stop. After some time to unpack and relax,
we will make our way over to a wine bar for an afternoon Spritz (a local
aperitif). Then, a walk to Piazza San Marco for the sunset, and later, dinner
at one of Shannon's favorite osterias. For those with extra energy, perhaps an
after dinner grappa stop will be in order.
Day two: Venice
is in an historic lagoon, with importance to surrounding communities and
islands. This day, we board boats and head into the lagoon for a five-hour
guided tour sites and gourmet lunch with wine. It will be a relaxing, memorable
day. Later, we head out for a wine bar crawl and eat lots of cichetti (Venetian
bar snacks, like tapas), drink some good local wines.
Day
three: Today a tour of the famous fish and vegetable market at Rialto
with Loris "Lolo" Manna, who was president of the fish market for over nine
years. After our tour, a wine tasting and delicious lunch at Lolo's restaurant,
Il Fontego dei Pescatori. Then the traghetto (ferry) back over the Grand Canal
to San Polo, including a visit to the Frari church. We will end our afternoon
in Campo Santa Margherita, enjoying a Spritz while absorbing life in the campo.
Dinner on your own.
Day
four: We'll head to the east side of town and thoroughly explore
Castello, where many of the cities most important places are. Lunch on the
lagoon and a free afternoon. you'll have a few hours on your own to do some
shopping, take a nap, check email, or sit in a café and write postcards.
Campo San Giacomo dell Orio for a pre-dinner drink, then dinner at one of the
best pizzerias in town.
Day five: We've actually got two
options here. We can either get into a van and drive to some Veneto towns such
as Bassano del Grappa and Asolo, OR we can get on the train and go to Verona
for the day. In other words, you, our guests will choose. This is another free
evening.
Day six: The Accademia museum has a remarkable
collection of Venetian art, where we'll spend some time, then head to the
Salute church exploring on the way. We will have pizza or a sandwich on the
Grand Canal and then explore the western part of San Marco. After a little
rest, we will take gondolas to our dinner destination - with wine, of course.
Day seven: We'll wander around the Cannaregio sestiere
(district) today, visiting the many important areas and structures there. We'll
munch on cichetti and tramezzino, delicious little sandwiches) when we get
peckish and stop for a coffee, spritz or glass of wine wherever, whenever we
feel the need. A relaxed day despite all the walking. In the evening, Shannon
will cook a fabulous send off meal with plenty of wine.
